The two most common species of marigolds are:

Tagetes erecta: This species includes the African marigolds, often known for their large, showy flowers. The African marigold's botanical name is Tagetes erecta.

Tagetes patula: The French marigold belongs to this species. These marigolds are smaller in size but come in a variety of colors. The botanical name for the French marigold is Tagetes patula.
